Why choose Private Lessons?

  • Private Dog Training Toowoomba

    Customised Training Plans

In-home sessions allow trainers to observe your dog in their home environment, and perform a full assessment of their lifestyle and behaviour.

Often the problem behaviours that your dog is exhibiting, are a SYMPTOM of deeper underlying issues, such as lack of structure and boundaries, fear or anxiety. Without identifying and addressing these underlying issues, it is more difficult to resolve the actual behaviours that are causing you concern.

1 on 1 lessons allow trainers to design a training plan customised for you and your dog’s training needs, leading to better long-term results.

Behaviour modification is not a “one-size-fits-all” approach

    Step-by-Step Approach

Initial training starts at home, where we teach you how to develop a relationship of trust and respect with your dog, as well as help you understand why your dog is doing what they are doing.

The distractions that often occur in public areas or group classes, such as unfamiliar dogs, people, or new scents, make it hard for the dog to focus and learn. Therefore, we also start the practical component of your dog’s training in your home, where we will teach you and your dog the skills and techniques that you will need when we progress the training to environments of higher level distraction, or around your dog’s triggers.

This approach is essential, especially when addressing behaviours such as leash reactivity and aggression.

    Owner Education

Much of the first lesson, will be about training the you, the owner. It is crucial for dog owners to understand their pet’s behaviors, as well as the skills and techniques necessary for effective training. Since you spend the most time with your dog, you will naturally become its primary trainer.

Without realising it, often the way we interact with our dogs on a daily basis can also contribute to our dog’s behaviour issues.

Lack of structure and boundaries in a dog’s life is one of the major causes of many of the behaviour issues trainers see.

By implementing a few easy to follow changes, you will quickly experience a more harmonious household after just one lesson.

Depending on your learning style, in addition to the in-person lessons, we can also provide supporting written handouts and online video lessons to help you with your homework, as required.

How it works

New Clients

**UPDATE - JANUARY 2025: We are currently not taking NEW clients for Private Lessons for dogs 5 months and older. We are only offering Private Puppy Lessons for new clients with puppies 2-4 months of age, and adult dog lessons for CURRENT clients**

We start with an initial 2 hour Behaviour Assessment & Lesson in your home.

Investment: $325 (includes training handouts & online videos as required)

Age Requirement: From 5 months of age onwards

If you decide to continue your dog’s training or behaviour modification with us, we have a range of ongoing training options:

  1. Private Training Program - we have a selection of Private Training Programs available, depending on your dog’s training needs as determined in the initial Behaviour Assessment & Lesson. Programs consist of 1 hour or 45 minute follow up lessons with a trainer in your home or other training location, as well included training equipment and additional training support. Your trainer will discuss Program options with you at the end of your lesson, once they better understand you and your dog’s needs and learning ability.

  2. Family Dog Obedience group classes - some dog owners choose to start training with a Private Lesson to get some one-on-one help with general issues or manners around the home, then continue training by attending one of our group classes, to focus on obedience skills.

Note: Group classes are not suitable for addressing more complex behaviour issues

Current Clients

If you are currently attending, or have attended Puppy Preschool or Family Dog Obedience classes with Think Canine in the last 6 months, you may not need to start with the full 2 hour Behaviour Assessment & Lesson.

Please talk to your trainer about your training needs and we will advise you on the best Private Lesson options for you. You may just need one or two 1 hour follow up lessons to help you implement what you have learnt in class into your home environment, or you may require the full 2 hour Behaviour Assessment & Lesson if there are more complex issues that need addressing.
